Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
