At least 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
